6th August: Monthly club meeting 6pm at the clubhouse.

11th August: Grafton away with the usual bus trip.

18th August: Lennox at home. Ballina Local Charity Day. Social event later.

19th August: Sunday clean-up by 2nd Grade.

25th August: WAR at home. Sponsor’s Day & Prostate Cancer fundraiser.

26th August: Sunday clean-up by 1st Grade.

The FFR request a clarification for the following:

Following a kick ahead, the ball goes over the goal line and whilst it is still up in the air, a player places his hand on it and grounds it. However, before this player grounds the ball, his feet are in touch.

We would like to know:

• Whether Law 22.4 (g) applies only to a ball already on the ground before it is touched down or other situations as described above;
• Whether the situation, as described above, is equivalent to “carrying the ball”.

Clarification of the Designated Members of the Rugby Committee
Law 19 or Law 22.4 (g) applies;

• If player is carrying the ball, enters the opposition in-goal area and the player’s feet touch the touch-in-goal line or beyond then the player is in touch-in-goal and a try is not awarded. Law 19 Touch and Lineout – Definitions
• If a player is not carrying the ball then Law 22.4 (g) applies – Player in touch or touch-in-goal. If an attacking player is in touch or in touch-in-goal, the player can score a try by grounding the ball in the opponents’ in-goal provided the player is not carrying the ball.

The designated members confirm that:
1. A try should not be awarded,
2. The player is considered to be carrying the ball as the ball is in the air when it is first played and,
3. Law 22.4 (g) only applies if the ball is on the ground.

Well Done to the Under 11 Blue. They played Lismore Green at Lismore and got off to a great start with Hamish scoring the first try only minutes into the game. The score at half time  was 22 – 5 showing the fantastic defensive efforts of the team who then continued to attack and go on to win the game 34 – 10.Tries to Aleki, Hamish, Kyus and Sam Well done to the whole team.

U11   Black

In only their second game of the season, the boys showed that they will quickly learn how to become competitive after a strong showing against a Wollongbar team with more games under their belt. It didn’t take our forwards long to work into a tight unit at scrum time after conceding the first couple of scrums to finish on top of the opposition pack. Whilst our forward play grew stronger as the game progressed we showed enough potential in the backs to have the coaches very happy with the overall team effort after the game even though Wollongbar were convincing winners on the scoreboard. Recycling at the maul was excellent and showed a willingness to back-up from the whole team. Well done to everyone on a solid TEAM effort.

Some further information will be added as coming event details are confirmed, eg: GF opponents etc, so please check the calendar as we move on through the season.

Special events for this month include a solo artist in the club after the Lennox game and a “P” fancy dress night with DJ following the Lismore game.

The rest of the season fixtures and events will be added in the coming days as well as other website up-dates.

Brent Horan is coaching Reserve Grade. Brent has retained his enthusiasm for this job and will also have the support of a number of “specialist coaches” throughout  the season.

Josh Piercy will follow up with his second year at the helm of the Under 19 coaching team. The core of the team from 2010 remains, and with the a number of new players showing up for this grade, Josh will again be training an exciting and enthusiastic group of keen young players.

Gary McDonald has been appointed to coach Third grade. Gary stood in very ably for Mick Koellner a number of times in 2010, when Mick was unavailable. Gary’s enthusiasm and commitment was infectious when he ran training. He is well organised and will bring a new direction to Third grade in 2011.

Pre-season training will start on FEBRUARY 8TH. 2011. The first few weeks of training will be at the beach, with Flat Rock being the most likely venue. Weather and beach conditions can sometimes present a problem, so players should check with one of the coaches for the correct venue and time. (Phone Colin on 66860148).
