The ARU & NSWRU are running a Foundation Course at the Ballina Rugby Club on Sunday the 6th June. This course is for anyone wanting to obtain their Level 1 Coaching or Level 1 Referee accreditation. It is an all day course with lunch provided and is highly recommended to anyone in the club considering refereeing rugby or coaching whether it be Juniors or Seniors. Both the Senior and Junior Clubs pay the $70 fee for any player or member of the club to do the course and the ARU generally only run one or two of these courses a year. With this course being run at our home club, it is a golden opportunity for members to obtain Level 1 accreditation. If you would like any further information about the course content, have a chat to Ross Wilkinson, Mick Claes or Karlo.

The Battered Prawns have been rumoured to be putting forward a consortium to buy the Big Prawn and have it mounted on the clubhouse roof in anticipation of the 2010 season. Having considered all the options available for the Prawn this appears to be one of the less moronic ideas. The proposal includes having the Prawn battered and cooked before being erected on the roof.

John Leon, when asked about the Bid, muttered something about South Africa which was totally ignored by the writer.

Having basked in the glory of television and newspaper coverage, the real measure of his impact was the fear that he has put into Peter FitzSimons, ex Wallaby and renowned author*. Known for his tough play and poetic tongue FitzSimons was gracious in his comments:

“It was great to play against Poppa. I had no idea of his age, only that when he put his right shoulder into my ribs on one occasion, it was obvious that he was carved out of teak and tenacity. He asked for no quarter and gave none – and it was an honour to play against him. Mind you, later in the game, I did put my palm into his face and BURST past him. I showed that old bastard who is boss, and he won’t forget ME in a hurry either!”

When asked about the game Poppa referred to FitzSimons as, “the young one with the sore ribs” he jokingly said “I am surprised that he can even walk after the bashing I gave him”.

After hearing FitzSimons’ quote Poppa has invited him (and the Mosman Whales) to Ballina for a rematch at any time, promising that “this time he will find out how tough the left shoulder is”.

*ed note: For those of you who have not read his books, he can write a great story. Whilst not as animated as a Mick Koellner bus trip they are highly recommended.

Bruce Gallaher, member of the battered prawns and financial saviour for strapping tape and physios alike, has been featured at the Masters Games in Sydney. No quotes could be gained from Poppa at this time, but Leuko have wished Bruce a long and continued career.

For all of you who are waivering about having a run, Poppa is a perfect example that you can never be too old to get out there and enjoy the game.

Poppa holds a unique place in rugby, having the ability to play and referee at the same time, many of the senior players have been trying to emulate this with no luck.

And to the poor bugger in photo 3… you should have seen what he did to Fitzsimons, you came off lucky.
