A brief history of junior rugby

In 1993 when juniors started there was no junior rugby anywhere on the north coast. It was a completely “novel idea”. We started with a handful of parents and senior players who organised and trained the boys in groups, under the direction of Chris Hickey. Boys and girls came from all over the area. The emphasis was on fun and learning skills. There were no finals or semi-finals or grand finals. Only short games in the last half of each Saturday morning session. There were no “winners and losers”. Teams were adjusted if one team was stronger than another.

When the Saturday morning rugby at Ballina grew too big, the surrounding clubs took over the boys from their area and began to run juniors on their home fields, for each areas local kids. Only then did the competitive club element come into play.
