The Weekly Nose

Muir Nose This week the nose wants to talk about diet and to give you some tips on healthy eating.

My best tip is to know what you are eating, for a week keep a meal diary and record what you have eaten, this will give you an idea of what you can change and where you are going wrong. Drinks can be the biggest problem in any plan, soft drinks, fruit juices and alcohol all contribute to unhealthy eating. Once you know where the problems are simple changes include cutting out snacking on mars bars swapping it for fruit, remembering that KFC is a sometimes food and if it is fried it is never a good idea. Vegetables with meals is a great idea but don’t smother them in butter or cheese. Breakfast is a necessity, skip it and healthy eating goes out the window.

If you are interested in getting some guidance I am happy to put you on the right track with a healthy eating plan.

This week I have had a number of questions, I have covered a few of these but will get to the rest next week.

Soft drinks, good or bad?

The soft drink can upend pretty much any healthy eating plan, the energy (calories) that is in a soft drink is usually a high percentage of your daily allowance. If you can cut them out completely, this will make a huge change to your health eating plan. I have included fruit juice in this, as fruit juice often has as much sugar in it as soft drinks. Go for a piece of fruit instead of a fruit juice and drink water.

I heard red wine is good for you?

In moderation red wine can help with reducing the risk of heart disease, but 3 bottles a night is not ‘in moderation’. Health experts recommend one glass a night at a maximum. A bottle of wine is 1200 calories or about half your daily intake allowance.

How bad is a night on the sauce?

I must admit that even I will have a night on the sauce once in a while, but it is all about moderation. Sometimes they are unavoidable (like when you get a lucky leave pass), the best thing you can do is to have the rest of the week away from alcohol. Whilst common theory is that the liver is evil and should be punished, even the most hardy liver needs a break.

A night on the sauce on a Friday before the game is never a good idea, it generally takes up to 48 hours for the alcohol to get out of your system. If you drink before the game you increase the likelihood of injuries and of getting an earful from the coach. That applies to first graders and colts alike.

Pork rinds and crackling taste so good they must be healthy?

Unfortuantely Craig under no circumstances do pork rinds form part of a healthy eating plan, doesn’t matter is they take the form of scratching, roasted or salted they are all bad. If you have a desperate need to crack into the pork rinds, again moderation is the key, that doesn’t mean a full pork belly.
